Financial Education for Latinos

“Sus Finanzas” (Your Finances) is a new financial literacy program for Latinos in America that covers interesting topics, from checking and savings accounts to household budget. It also includes information about credit and microloans to start new businesses. Offered through California Human Development’s Stockton ASET Center, it was founded by Leandro Vicuña, a Stockton Bank Executive. The program has seen its first class of 15 graduates and offers an incentive program: all who establish, make additional deposits to and maintain a savings account for six months will receive matching funds up to US $250. According to Leandro Vicuña, the most exciting aspect of the project is “having an impact on these people who need help… If we can change bad habits and create good habits through our Monetary Matching Program, that is a huge victory”. “Sus Finanzas” is not tied to any particular financial institution. “We are not getting money from one bank and promoting that one bank, we want the consumer to make that decision depending on what their needs are and the bank services”, he explains.
