Hacking a Smartphone is not a Crime

The Electronic Freedom Foundation was a relevant player against SOPA and PIPA. Now it is urging people to ask the government of the United States to declare that hacking tablets, smartphones, video game consoles and other electronic devices is not a crime. In its website the group says: “[the devices] are powerful computers with lots of untapped potential. Yet many of these devices are set up to run only software that’s been approved by the manufacturer. Modifying a device to run independent software is important to programmers, enthusiasts, and users”. Jailbreaking is particularly popular on iPhones, as an answer to Apple’s closed environment. Apple maintains the right to fine their customers since its software is copyrighted.
