Metafinance: a New Weapon Against Poverty
In an article published in Huffington Post, Melanie Walker, deputy director for special initiatives in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, presents an “exciting new intermediate type of financing”: metafinance, a low-risk financing that can bridge the gap that exists between microfinance loans in the US $1,000 range and municipal loans that start in the UD $ 1,000,000 range. The new scheme helps low-income groups pool their collective resources into down payments, secure financing for local construction and work in partnership with cities to get access to essential public services. “Metafinance can provide a way for the poor and underserved to partner with local governments and take an active role in improving the health, living standards, and productivity of traditionally marginalized communities” Walker concludes.
