Peru has the Best Environment for Microfinance
The annual survey Microfinance Business Environment 2011 considers that Peru offers and excellent legal framework, sophisticated regulators and a government commitment to use microfinance and expand financial access for the poor. The study was prepared by The Economist Intelligence Unit and ranks the microfinance’ business environment for 55 countries. In this edition Peru was followed by Bolivia, Pakistan and Kenya. According to the survey in the last year Peru has deepened its strong foundations with new rules to improve financial soundness, and with a proposed innovative mobile-banking law. The study also praises the work of the Super-intendancy of Banking, Insurance and Pension funds, the principal regulator of microfinance sectors. A favorable legal framework has set forth well defined rules for regulated and non-regulated microfinance institutions, the document says.
