The Benefits of Transforming MFIs into Banks

Journalist Ramesh S. Arunachalam thinks that Indian microfinance institutions should be permitted to transform into banks in a strategy that will allow them improve services and reduce costs. Nevertheless he warns that before to give the authorization The Reserve Bank of India must ensure that the MFIs follow the adequate policies and procedures. The process, he believes, will help to bring a sustainable delivery of financial services to low income people across the country, enhancing, at the same time, the financial inclusion. The banking license would enable the MFIs tap public deposits (the cheapest source of non-subsidized capital) and would reduce considerably the total cost of servicing this market.
